Architecture is a profession defined by rigorous credentialing, complex software mastery, and portfolio work that takes years to develop. None of that matters to the Applicant Tracking System that screens your application first. ATS systems read text, match keywords, and filter candidates based on whether specific terms appear in your document — before any human sees your name.
For architects, there are three specific failure modes that eliminate otherwise strong candidates at the automated screening stage: certification abbreviation errors, missing BIM vocabulary, and vague software descriptions. Each is fixable in under an hour.
Architecture has some of the most abbreviated credentials in any profession — ARB, RIBA, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, BREEAM, Part III. The problem is that ATS systems and recruiters search for both the abbreviation and the full name. A search for "Architects Registration Board" will not return a resume that only contains "ARB". A search for "ARB" will not return a resume that only reads "fully registered architect."
The solution is to write both in the same phrase: "ARB (Architects Registration Board)", "RIBA Chartered Member — Royal Institute of British Architects", "LEED AP BD+C". This captures both search patterns in one line and also communicates clearly to international recruiters who may not recognise regional abbreviations.
Most mid-career architects have extensive BIM experience — but many resumes either omit the term entirely or bury it inside a vague phrase like "digital design tools." BIM (Building Information Modelling) is a high-value keyword. So are the specific platforms: Revit, AutoCAD, ArchiCAD, SketchUp, Rhino, Grasshopper, 3ds Max, and Vectorworks are each searched separately by recruiters and ATS configurations.
RIBA stages are similarly important. "Concept design," "schematic design," "technical design," "planning permission," "building regulations," and "contract administration" are the vocabulary of UK practice. Their US equivalents — "schematic design," "design development," "construction documents," "construction administration" — serve the same ATS function for American roles. Use the terminology that matches the geography of your target role.

Sustainability is increasingly a filter criterion for architecture roles, particularly in commercial, public sector, and high-spec residential projects. But sustainability experience is only ATS-visible when you name the schemes and metrics explicitly: BREEAM, LEED, Passivhaus, net zero carbon, embodied carbon, EPC rating.
"Strong sustainability credentials" or "environmentally conscious design approach" match nothing in an ATS search. The name of the scheme — and where possible the rating level (BREEAM Excellent, LEED Gold, Passivhaus certified) — is what gets you through the filter.

The strongest architecture portfolios in a shortlist are useless if the resume never reaches the shortlist. ATS systems cannot view DWG files, open PDF portfolios, or follow Issuu links. Every capability demonstrated in your portfolio needs to also appear as plain text in your resume — named explicitly, with certifications written in full alongside their abbreviations.

The most common reasons are: listing only the abbreviation "ARB" or "RIBA" without the full form; omitting BIM vocabulary when your experience includes it; and listing software in broad terms rather than naming Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Rhino, and ArchiCAD individually.
Write both in the same phrase: "ARB (Architects Registration Board)" or "Chartered Architect — ARB". ATS systems and recruiters search for both the abbreviation and the full name.
